Teaching Kids About Global Warming and Climate Change
Climate change and global warming are some of the most argued over topics today. This means that even some of the information you see online may give you the wrong information. It is important that as the younger generation, you are given a chance to know the truth about what goes on in the world.
Six Things You Need to Know About Global Warming
- The cause of global warming. The main reason the world is heating up is because of the carbon dioxide released from burning coal, oil, and gas. This carbon dioxide comes from things like cars, power plants, and places like factories. Besides carbon dioxide, methane gases, CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), and nitrous oxide are also to blame. These gases are building up in the atmosphere and trap heat.
- In the past 100 years, the average temperature has risen by about 1-degree F, but is expected to heat up another 3 to 10 degrees F in the next 100 years. While the earth does change naturally, we humans have sped up this process. While it may not seem like much of a difference, the small numbers add up and the change in general is not good.
- Global warming is caused by what people do. This change in temperature is not caused by things like volcanoes or changes in the sun, it comes from us.
- Weather and climate are not the same thing. While weather means what a specific day is like, climate means what the weather is like in an area for a long time. For example, in Florida, the climate is pretty warm and wet, but the weather could change from rainy one day to sunny the next.
- The hole in the ozone layer is not the cause of global warming. While the ozone hole is not a good thing, it is not directly causing global warming. However, many things that cause the ozone to go away also cause climate change.
- Global warming is a serious issue. As the world heats up, it is expected that there will be much more rain in very heavy frequencies. This means we will probably be seeing longer times when it is very dry and times when it is very wet. For areas that are surrounded by water, this means flooding. For areas that are very dry, this means they could run very low on water. Animals, plants, and humans all suffer from global warming.
