We can't talk about Thomas Edison's work without discussing the invention of the telegraph, dynamo, and phonograph without mentioning his contributions to the invention of the telegraph. Phonograph
The phonograph is a device that reproduces sound on a physical medium. Thomas Edison's first phonograph was a simple tabletop device that recorded sounds. It was not yet commercially available and a few years after its creation became a luxury item. It was made of paraffin paper and cost several thousand dollars. But with a few improvements, the phonograph quickly became a success and is still popular today.
Telegraph
Samuel Morse invented the telegraph in the 1830s, making long-distance communication possible. The system he developed used a metal stylus to mark chemically-treated paper, which would then run through a typewriter-like device. It could record up to 1,000 words per minute, making long messages possible. Using Edison's system allowed for a faster rate of communication, and the telegraph soon became the primary form of communication. Edison developed a more advanced telegraphy system between 1870 and 1874.
Dynamo
Thomas Edison's dynamo is a famous example of a patented technology. In 1878, he filed his first patent application for improvements to electric lights. Before 1847, however, dynamos had already been used to generate DC power, and for industrial uses as far back as 1844. Edison's power system incorporated the dynamo in its entirety. Despite the fact that it took him a few years to come up with the perfect electric light bulb, the dynamo had been used for industrial purposes long before the invention of the modern electric light bulb.
Stock ticker
Thomas A. Edison created the first digital electronic market signal in 1869. The original stock ticker transmitted information using telegraph wiring, and the information on the screen was written in Morse code. However, Edison improved the stock ticker, and it was soon gaining widespread acceptance. He even received a patent for his invention - number 140,488 - and the technology was soon used by a multitude of businesses and institutions.
Edison's Ore-Milling Company
The history of Thomas Edison's Ore-Milled Company goes back to 1879 when the inventor was looking for the perfect filament for his electric light. He found platinum, and after several experiments tried various mining and mineral processing techniques to reduce the cost; he patented a magnetic method for ore separation. In 1880, Edison established the Edison Ore-Milling Company, backed by a group of investors.
His relationship with Mina Miller
When they met, Mina Miller was 20 years old and Edison was 38. Edison had already become wealthy and famous, holding 1,093 patents. But Miller, who was raised by wealthy industrialist Lewis Miller, was not. As a child, she attended boarding school in Chautauqua, where she met progressive orators. She was also interested in temperance and education reform. She first got married to Edison and later, to a German army officer, and helped support Germany during World War I.
